  • Nicholls Interiors Elwood

Elwood is one of the most desired areas of inner-city Melbourne, with its leafy green streets, proximity to the beach and only a stone throw from the vibrant St Kilda nightlife. Elwood is home to a mix of long-time locals, young families who still want to be close to the action and younger people who are drawn to the many mid-century flats.

Residential Architecture in Elwood

The architecture in Elwood includes many Art Deco apartments and Edwardian homes. We have helped transform many old buildings into slick new homes and apartment buildings, using sheer curtains for softness, roman blinds as great blockouts in kids’ bedrooms and planation shutters on street facing windows. As the blocks tend to be smaller than some more suburban blocks, we commonly use folding arm awnings to extend the indoors by creating outdoor rooms. All of these options are available with motorisation for the ultimate convenience.

To discuss how we can help you transform your Hampton home, visit our showroom at 159 Martin Street, Brighton or give us a call on (03) 9596 2335 or request a free measure and quote.

Elwood local knowledge

Elwood is an inner suburb of Melbourne, 8 km south of Melbourne’s CBD. Elwood Beach is always popular with walkers, windsurfers, cyclists and runners and is the home to some trendy restaurants such as Elwood Bathers.

Woy Woy is the earliest of a small group of multi-storied modernist flats in Elwood, it is also the earliest of its kind in Melbourne. Built in 1925–1936 the flats were designed by Mewton & Grounds and the interlocking cubic forms in the design reveal an interest in architect Willem Dudok. Nicholls Interiors was part of its refurbishment in 2019.

What do locals love about Elwood?

Elwood feels like an urban village, with its quiet winding streets, bike paths and canal. It has a relaxed feel with a strong café and restaurant culture along Ormond Road. The beach is at the end of many of the streets with access to the popular bike path/ walking track and sandy beaches. Elwood borders St Kilda for close proximity to its vibrant nightlife, but equally is far enough way from the neon lights for a relaxed feel.

The suburb is a popular choice for homebuyers with its location to the city and despite its median house price of 1.9M and weekly rental rate of $790.

Main streets and precincts

Elwood Village starts around the roundabout at the corner of Glen Huntly Road and Ormond Road, which is full of cafes, organic supermarkets and local stores and goes all the way down to the beach. Ormond Road includes the long-standing Turtle Café. Elwood is boarded by Elsternwick Park, Balaclava and St Kilda.
