Contemporary Family Home in Hampton: Defined by Light, Texture and Calm

Recently featured in The Design Files, we are proud to have supplied window furnishings for this beautifully resolved Hampton home by Studio Esar - a thoughtful example of how considered design can transform everyday living. With a focus on natural light, materiality and understated warmth, the home balances architectural clarity with a soft, lived-in feel - something we value deeply at Nicholls Interiors.

While the architecture provides the foundation, it’s the layering of finishes, textures and light that truly brings the home to life. One of these often underestimated elements is the home’s window furnishings.

Designing with Light in Mind

One of the most striking aspects of this home is how it embraces natural light. Large windows and open-plan spaces invite sunlight deep into the interiors, creating a sense of calm and openness.

With this being the case, intentionally selected window coverings are essential to manage glare, protect interiors and maintain comfort and energy efficiency throughout the day and night.

Soft, sheer curtains are a natural fit in spaces like this. They gently diffuse harsh sunlight, creating a warm, ambient glow without compromising the connection to the outdoors. The result is a home that feels bright yet relaxed, while maintaining privacy. As pictured, the living space features white and cream hues, where texture offers visual variation, with the sheer linen curtains complementing the Moroccan tiled fireplace.

In both the lounge and dining spaces, Nicholls Interiors supplied our s-fold curtains, unlined in Mokum Drift in the colour Lunar.

Layering Texture for Warmth

This project leans into a palette of warm neutrals and tactile materials, using timber, stone and soft textiles to create depth without visual noise.

Window furnishings play a key role in this layered approach. Full-height curtains introduce softness and movement, balancing the clean lines of the architecture. When paired with functional blinds or shades, they also add a practical layer of privacy and insulation.

At Nicholls Interiors, we often recommend this kind of layering for Melbourne homes. It allows for flexibility across the day (filtered light in the morning, privacy and comfort in the evening) while contributing to a more cohesive, considered interior.

Within the bedrooms of this project, Nicholls Interiors paired our s-fold curtains in Warwick, Burano in the colour Vanilla with Luxaflex roller blinds.

Creating Spaces That Feel Calm and Considered

What makes this Hampton home so successful is its sense of restraint. Every element feels intentional, with no detail overlooked. Overall, the material palette gently reflects the home’s surroundings - pale Scandinavian herringbone timber floors echo the nearby sandy beaches, complemented by soft greens, peach tones and warm neutrals.

Window furnishings contribute quietly but powerfully to this feeling. Clean installations, carefully selected fabrics and colours that sit comfortably within the broader palette all help create a seamless finish.

Rather than drawing attention, they support the architecture - softening edges, improving acoustics and enhancing overall comfort.

Balancing Beauty and Performance

While the aesthetic outcome is undeniable, performance is equally important, particularly in Melbourne’s climate.

High-quality window coverings can:

  • Reduce heat gain in summer

  • Improve insulation in cooler months

  • Protect interiors from UV damage

  • Enhance privacy without sacrificing light

Solutions such as layered curtains and advanced shade systems offer both beauty and functionality, ensuring the home not only looks refined but feels comfortable year-round.
