Bring in your plans as early as possible so we can work with you to ensure that you have allowed for adequate fixing and space in pelmets for blinds and curtains. Also because motorisation is so important we can supply electrical cables early to your builder before plastering commences.
In most product categories there are three types of fabrics – sheer, transparent and blockout. Sheer fabric provides privacy in the day but at night people can see in. Translucent fabric allows all the natural light to enter but does not allow vision in or out in the day or night. And blockout fabric blocks both light and vision. Ideal to use in your bedroom for darkness.
Achieving a completely blockout room can be difficult, the only way to do this is with curtains and a pelmet. Roman blinds are also commonly used where curtains are not appropriate. Read our recent blog post on getting your bedroom as dark as possible.
Lead times vary depending on the product you order. Many blinds are ready within a few weeks and we’ll be able to provide you with an exact time and will contact you once they are ready for installation. Allow extra time at Christmas.
Different blinds and shades are different and not all cleaning tips apply to all our products. If you’re unsure, please contact Us. All of our blinds come with clear and concise cleaning and care instructions.
In general, regular dusting is recommended for keeping blinds clean. You can also use a wet wipe on small marks. Do not use chemicals. Refer to the Nicholls Interiors cleaning instructions specific to the brand and fabric.
Motorised blinds eliminate the need for unsightly cords or chains and can be operated simultaneously. Blinds can be motorised with hardwired power (requires an electrician) or lithium battery (no electrician required).

Sheer blinds and louvered blinds are best for privacy and light control. Sheer blinds provide daytime privacy and allow natural light to filter in. Louvered blinds such as the Luxaflex Silhouette, Plantation Shutters or Timber Venetians allow privacy by angling blades while still permitting vision and light. See the full range of blinds in our showroom at 159 Martin Street, Brighton.
The best products for wet areas like bathrooms are faux timber venetians or shutters as they are not affected by moisture. However, in a well-ventilated bathroom or kitchen, we often use blinds and curtains. It’s best to assess each space individually and determine what will work functionally as well as aesthetically to meet your desired needs.
Sheer linen curtains are a popular choice for large windows and doors. Consider motorisation to make the frequent operation of these effortless. Nicholls Interiors have a large range of sheer linen curtains, with motorisation options available.
At Nicholls Interiors, curtains can be made in the following configurations
Freeflow: Useful when there are different scenarios for stacking (ie a wardrobe door/ kitchen cabinets that need to open fully but that is the preferred stacking side).
Curtains can stack approximately 1/3 of their track size. We always recommend utilising wall space for stacking to maximise light when the curtains are opened. If no wall space is available the stacking will be over the window space. Come into the Nicholls Interiors showroom to see in person: 159 Martin Street, Brighton.
At Nicholls, we encourage you to think about the purpose of your curtain. A sheer curtain adds softness, provides daytime privacy and diffuses light. A blockout curtain offers excellent insulation and blockout as well as added softness to a room. Often blockout curtains are used in bedrooms as they offer an excellent blockout solution for shift workers and those who like to sleep in dark bedrooms.
Blockout curtains are one of the best energy efficient window treatments available. They are installed higher and wider than your window and seal the space to trap the transfer of air both ways. See Nicholl Interiors’ full range of Blockout Curtains.
Our curtain tracks can be manually operated or motorised. Motorised curtains can be integrated into home automation systems and/or can be operated by remote control.
To motorise a curtain on a good quality motor such as SOMFY, you add approximately $2k to the cost of an average sized curtain. This cost will vary depending on the length of the track. Nicholls Interiors partners with SOMFY – one of the largest manufacturers of controllers and drives for blinds and awnings to help bring smart home solutions to your home.
Shutters add value to your home through improved aesthetics and functionality. They are a durable, long-term investment that can increase resale value, provide excellent light control, enhance privacy and improve energy efficiency through insulation which can reduce heating and cooling costs. Nicholls Interiors Plantation shutters are custom made to suit your home and can be crafted from natural timbers, PVC and aluminium.
Timber shutters offer a more natural and classic aesthetic and are lightweight, while PVC shutters are more durable, water-resistant and lower-maintenance, making them ideal for high-moisture areas.
At Nicholls Interiors, we recommend you wipe down the shutters regularly with a microfibre cloth, soft brush or vacuum cleaner attachment. A damp cloth can be used to wipe each blade for a deeper clean – then use a dry cloth to wipe each blade.
Shutters improve energy efficiency as they are a great insulator when left in the closed position. Particularly the Luxaflex Polysatin shutter which provides insulation by trapping air in their hollow polyresin material. They are durable, water-resistant and low-maintenance. Available at Nicholls Interiors.
Outdoor awnings reduce energy costs by cooling indoor spaces, prevent the fading of furniture and floors and create usable outdoor living areas for relaxation and socializing. See the large range of Outdoor Awnings available at Nicholls Interiors.
Folding Arm Awnings are best used for extending a living space and providing a desirable outdoor living zone. The Luxaflex Evo straight drop awning is ideal for cooling indoor spaces and the Luxaflex Magnatrack is perfect for enclosing an outdoor room, while being wind rated to 175km/h.
Awnings can be motorised with remote controls and can also be linked to home automation systems. Motorising Canvas awnings are a great way to automate the most traditional of outdoor blinds. Visit our Brighton showroom to see the many different materials, colours and styles available. 159 Martin Street, Brighton.
Selecting a darker and/or textured fabric for outdoor awnings is more forgiving in the long term. Awnings can be cleaned with a soft brush and water solution. It is important to always allow the awning to dry completely before retracting it to prevent mould and mildew.
